That's my problem as well, but usually I can work up a big enough lead to handle a blue shell or two. I've learned though you're more likely to have a red shell come at you then a blue shell so I keep a banana on hand so I can use it to block any item coming up behind me.

Definitely blue shell. If the bob-ombs showed up more frequently, then they would be the worst. At least with the blue shell, you know it's coming and you cn use a boost to get out of the way, but if someone throws a bob-omb at you, there's no dodging it.
